PM Narendra Modi said Sunday in Kolkata that it was because of the Citizenship Amendment Act that the entire world became conscious of the "persecution" of minorities by Pakistan. "If we had not tabled the amendment, there would have been no uproar," he added.

"If this conflict had not occurred, the world would not have understood who oppressed and trampled upon minorities in Pakistan. Our plan ensures that Pakistan will now have to address why it has oppressed minorities for the last 70 years. Human rights in Pakistan have been destroyed,' he added.

Home minister Amit Shah, speaking at a rally in Jabalpur, said those who issued slogans against India would be put behind bars. "Many students have created slogans against India, ' Bharat tere tukde honge ek hazar, Inshallah Inshallah ' To JNU. They shouldn't be put in prison? Those who lift anti-national sentiments are to be put behind bars, "he said at the CAA rally for outreach.

Shah challenged former president of the Congress Rahul Gandhi and Mamata Banerjee to find out a specific clause of CAA which could take away the citizenship of an Indian.

"Congress and opposition parties trick the nation into CAA and instigate minorities," he said, adding, "Since independence, Congress divided the country on the basis of religion." Shah said the government "will not rest" until all the refugees from Pakistani minority communities are given Indian citizenship.

Significantly, Modi selected the Ramakrishna Mission's Belur headquarters, synonymous with the life and work of Swami Vivekananda, to launch a full-throated CAA defense. "CAA is not about withdrawing citizenship, it's about granting citizenship," he said to a gathering.

His expression focussed on "youth." Vivekananda's birthday is commemorated as a National Youth Day. The PM said there was a "misguided" section of youth "We need to tell them the truth ... We have done just what Mahatma Gandhi said decades ago.

Will we send back those refugees to death? Is they or are they not our responsibility? Should we or should we not consider them our citizens? Should we not give them equal treatment as Indian citizens? I'm doing just that which Mahatma Gandhi wanted us to do, "he added.

Modi focused his weapons on the government of Trinamool, speaking at another gathering. After Syama Prasad Mookerjee, Renaming Kolkata Port Trust, he accused the state government of failing to implement central schemes because it could not make "split revenue" out of them.
