With the launch of FASTag in the country, fraudsters found a new way to cheat the citizens. The scamster is attempting to siphon money from gullible citizens ' bank accounts via UPI on the pretext of helping people register and get their FASTag to work. Recently, the first incident of that scam was officially reported when a Bengalurian man lost Rs 50,000 to scamsters.

He received a fake call from Axis Bank's so-called customer service executive, who had sent him an online form to fill in to get his FASTag wallet running after complaining that the wallet was not working.

By fooling him over the online registration process, the scamsters cleverly managed to get the victim's UPI PIN. "The caller sent me a link via SMS that said,' Axis Bank — FASTag form' and asked me to give some details to activate my FASTag wallet. I provided details in the form including my full name, registered mobile number and Unified Payment Interface (UPI) PIN.
I considered that the application itself served as a recharge point. I just typed and submitted the PIN. I was then told the helpdesk had generated a one-time pass (OTP) that was sent to my phone. The caller told me to send the OTP to another number and I've done it accordingly, "he explained.
Readers are advised not to disclose any PIN or password to anyone under any circumstances, or enter it for any purpose in any random form. FASTag registration does not require you to submit any online banking details or password at all. Since FASTag service is new, scamsters are trying to cheat citizens with every means.
There are only two ways you can activate your Fastags-either by activating yourself using the MyFastag app or by visiting the nearest bank branch. Registration on the FASTag can not happen by talking over the phone to some bank employee. If you happen to receive any such calls, disconnect immediately and then visit yourself to the bank branch to check if there are any issues.
Because Fastags are usually linked to bank accounts, all payments are deducted directly from the account balance in question. Users also have the option of creating, recharging and connecting a NHAI Prepaid wallet to the Fastag for payments. You can also recharge your Fastag using UPI via the MyFastag app.
