Owner of a Porsche 911 sports car, worth about 2 crore, charged $27.68 lakh to unpaid taxes, interest and penalties to get back his automobile that had been impounded for lack of proper documentation and since 2017 operating in the state without registration, police said on Wednesday.

Upon paying the money to the Ahmedabad Regional Transport Office (RTO), on Tuesday, the car owner-Ranjit Desai- picked up his impounded car from the city traffic police upon displaying the receipt from the RTO, police sub-inspector M B Virja, who had detained the silver-colored sports car last year.

Ahmedabad Traffic Police posted the RTO receipt picture on their Twitter handle, saying the penalty of some 27.68 lakh was India's largest ever.

"During a routine check by Ahmedabad Traffic West Police for not providing required documents, RTO slaps a total of 27.68 Lakh on Porsche Car. One of the largest fines ever imposed in the world," tweeted Wednesday the traffic police.

According to the report, the owner of the car charged some 16 lakh in lieu of motor vehicle duty, some 7.68 lakh as interest on the unpaid tax and some 4 lakh as fine.

The car was stopped here on November 28 by Virja at Helmet crossroad, as it had no number plates.

The driver also failed to produce relevant vehicle records on being questioned too, the police officer said.

"So, we had seized the car and given a RTO memo under the Motor Vehicle Act. Which indicates he has to deposit the fine with the RTO and come back to us with a refund to get the vehicle back," Virja said.

Originally a fine of some9.8 lakh was levied, but when the owner went to deposit that sum, he added that the RTO pulled out old records and placed the punishment of some27.68 lakhs, which is India's maximum.

"In 2017, the vehicle was manufactured. Although the owner originally registered the vehicle in Haryana, when the car was impounded, the number plates were absent. Because the automobile is now in Gujarat, the RTO has estimated the lifetime fee, interest on unpaid tax and fine at an altitude of 27.68 lakh. Upon handing us the receipt the owner took his car back on Tuesday, "the officer said.
