The e-assessment scheme eliminates personal interaction between taxpayer and department of income tax
Digitally signed notifications have been served in 44,285 cases after its launch in October.
Following the launch of the e-assessment facility in October last year, out of the 58,322 cases selected for faceless assessment, digitally signed notices have been served in 44,285 cases (as announced by the finance ministry). The e-assessment scheme will initiate a paradigm shift in a manner that conducts tax proceedings.
In a bid to curb taxpayer harassment, Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman announced a faceless e-assessment scheme while presenting her maiden budget in 2019. The scheme is part of the government's efforts to reduce human discretion in assessing and scrutinizing tax returns, which might in turn help eliminate corruption possibilities.

What is e-assessment scheme?
An individual or a taxpayer is not required to appear before an income-tax authority, either personally or through an authorized representative, in connection with any e-assessment proceeding involving a response to a notice issued by the taxpayer.
Expected benefits of the faceless e-assessment of income tax:
Tax notices will be issued by a centralised e-assessment centre requiring taxpayers to reply only through digital mode.
Taxpayers will also be alerted through text messages. Taxpayers can email their responses to the National e-Assessment Centre .
The scheme is part of efforts by the government to reduce human discretion when assessing and scrutinizing tax returns.
Cases will be referred automatically to eight different e-assessment units across the country, under e-assessment. This is expected to improve transparency and reduce grievances and litigation related to overpitched assessments.
Under the income tax department as per the scheme, a national e-assessment center was created, along with some regional e-assessment centres.
