In the next three years, the government plans to electrify all the railways

The Ministry of Finance stated that in the next three years, Indian Railways will aim to achieve full electrification of its tracks

The railways had used around 18 billion units of electricity in 2018-19.


Government has set a target for the next three years to fully electrify Indian Railways ' tracks. The Union Ministry of Finance announced this on Sunday after Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman submitted her second budget on 1 February.


In a series of tweets, the Ministry of Finance has stated that Indian Railways will aim to achieve complete electrification of its tracks over the next three years.


"37,500 km (58 per cent) of already electrified railroad tracks. 27,000 km balance to be electrified by Railways by 2023. Will reduce pollution, improve railway efficiency, "it tweeted.


In 2018-19, the railways had consumed about 18 billion units of electricity (about 1.27 percent of total electricity consumption in the country) and 3,069.30 kiloliters of diesel for their traction needs.


Yadav said that with 100% electrification and rail traffic projected to grow, it was estimated that the Indian Railways would consume about 28-30 billion units of electricity to meet their traction requirements. In another tweet, the Ministry said: ' 150 private sector trains under PPP arrangements, which are likely to attract private investment of about 222,500 crore for Railway.


Railway minister Piyush Goyal had said that by 2030 Indian Railways would be the world's first "net-zero" carbon emitter.


According to data from NITI Aayog, Indian Railways carbon dioxide emissions were around 6.84 million tons in 2014. Indian Railways is also working to reduce carbon emissions amid global concerns about climate change.


The railways have taken several steps to speed up the electrification of the country's railway lines, including awarding contracts for Engineering Procurement and Construction (EPC), better project monitoring mechanism, delegating more power to field units to award contracts / assent estimates, and closer monitoring at the highest level.
