Provident fund subscribers should keep their EPF account updated

The Employees ' Provident Fund Organization (EPFO) has now launched a' date of exit ' facility on the EPF portal, allowing subscribers to update their exit date online after changing jobs. EPF account holders were previously dependent on their ex-employers to declare the exit date, as the facility was not available online to EPF subscribers.

"Additionally, employees can now update their exit date," EPFO announced today on Twitter.

Here is how to update your date of exit on EPFO portal:

  • Log in to the EPFO portal with your UAN (Universal Account Number) and password.

  • Go to the section "Manage" and click "Exit mark" You will then be given the option to select your PF account number from the drop-down menu "Select employment."

  • Fill in the date of departure and reason for departure. Click on "Request OTP" option and enter OTP that is sent to your mobile number linked to Aadhaar. Choose the checkbox, then click "Update" and then "Ok."

  • You will then receive a message stating that the exit date has been successfully updated. Once done, you can go to "View" and "Service History" where the date of entry and exit from both the EPF and the EPS will be displayed.

You can not mark your exit date until two months after leaving the company. Several EPF subscribers had complained in the past that their former employers did not cooperate in declaring the date of exit on the EPFO portal.

It is important to mark your exit date, as it could later affect claim submissions and settlements. If your exit date is not correctly marked after switching jobs then your job may not be treated as continuous and you may be asked to pay tax on the interest earned during the interim period.
