Basic measures to protect against new coronavirus

  • Wash your hands with an alcohol-based hand rubbing or with soap and water

  • Why? For what? Washing your hands with a hand rub or soap based on alcohol, and water kills the virus if it's on your hands.

  • Maintain social distance – maintain a distance of at least 1 meter (3 feet) between yourself and others, especially those who cough, sneeze and fever.

  • Why? For what? When someone infected with a respiratory disease such as 2019-nCoV, coughs or sneezes they project small droplets that contain the virus. You can breathe in the virus when you're too close

  • Avoid touching eyes, mouth and nose

  • Why? For what? Hands touch many surfaces that may become contaminated by the virus. If your contaminated hands touch your eyes, nose or mouth, you can transfer the virus from the surface to yourself.

  • If you have fever, coughing and breathing difficulties, seek medical attention early. Tell your health care provider if you have been traveling to an area in China where 2019-nCoV has been reported, or if you have been in close contact with someone who has traveled from China with breathing symptoms.

Why? For what? It is important to seek medical attention promptly whenever you have fever, cough and difficulty breathing as this may be due to a respiratory infection or another serious condition. Respiratory symptoms with fever can have a variety of causes, and 2019-nCoV could be one of them, depending on your personal travel history and circumstances.

If you have mild respiratory symptoms and no travel history to or within China, practice basic respiratory and hand hygiene carefully and stay home, if possible, until you recover.

Practice general hygiene measures as a general precaution when visiting markets for live animals, wet markets or the markets for animal products. After touching animals and animal products, ensure regular hand washing with soap and potable water; avoid touching the eyes, nose or mouth with hands; and avoid contact with sick animals or spoiled animal products.Strictly avoid contact with other animals (e.g., stray cats and dogs, rodents, birds, bats) on the market. Avoid contact with potentially contaminated animal waste or fluids on the soil or shop and market structures

Evite the use of raw or undercooked animal products. Handle raw meat, milk or animal organs with care, as per good food safety practices, to avoid cross-contamination with uncooked foods.
